Name of Artist: Elizabeth Carmel
Dates of Artist’s Life: 1964- Still Living
1. Personal Background:
Elizabeth Carmel is a professional fine arts photographer, specializing in landscapes and “waterscapes”. She lives in Truckee and Calistoga, California. She is married to Olof Carmal and together they have one fourteen year old daughter. She has her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from UC, Berkeley in 1987. In 2006, her and 11 other photographers worldwide were named as Hasselblad Master Photographers.
2. Style:
Elizabeth Carmel is a landscape and “waterscape” photographer. She travels the world and takes amazing photographs of the things she sees. All her photos are very interesting and and they always look like something new. With landscape photography I feel that it is very hard to capture photos that don’t look the same, but with her art everything seems new and exciting. All her photographs are colorful and bright and make me feel calm.
3. Philosophy:
This is one of the main reasons why I love her so much. From a social/ political view in her words she says, “I believe that experiencing the Earth’s beauty has the power to help nourish and unify us, both on a personal and global level.” (elizabethcarmel.com) I think that is perfect and unique way to contribute to our society. If we have seen the beauty that she captures of nature you will believe too that she could unify a nation with her photography. All her photos have something that lots of people could agree they like; colors, nature, movements, etc.
4. Influences:
She influenced me to find the color in things. I am usually a very bland artist, because I like my neutrals and have a very conscious comfort zone. She taught me that colors are beautiful and helped me pushed my comfort zone out farther. In her work I saw that she tried to make the subject of the photo pop. In my photos I tried to do the same and I tried to do the same editing skills that she uses.

6. Compare and Contrast:
I chose to recreate the three photos from her collection; Early Autumn, Ocean Stone, Baja, Calla Lily. I tried to recreate my photos with the same colors and shadows that she used in her photos. Early Autumn had snow in it and obviously it hasn’t snowed yet in Michigan, so I used felt and then I got some leaves from outside. The second one I did was Calla Lily which was harder to take a photo of because no stores near me had alive calla lilies, so I had to go to Micheals. They had one there that I used for the photo, while editing it I had to bring up the brightness, concentration, and saturation up a lot. The last one I recreated was Ocean Stone, Baja. The main thing I saw in the photo that I needed to recreate was the stone with stripes. That rock was harder to find, but I found it in my backyard and used it as the main subject in my photograph.
7. Personal Artist Statement:
I went walking in the woods one autumn day, fresh snow has just fallen, and the last of the leave of the trees were perfectly placed on top. The snow acted like a blank canvas with the perfect background for the photograph. I went walking in the woods later that year. The flowers bloomed with vibrance, the perfect calla lily laid before me. I cropped tight around it to get this perfect photo. Few months past, and it is in the summer, I went to the river in the woods. Rocks of all colors were lying perfectly. From a downward viewpoint I got the image of all the rocks that caught my eye.
